“There’s a basic expectation of transparency not being met by the hospitals in New Hampshire, despite the federal requirements established in 2021. Patients and employers confronting higher healthcare costs caused by hospitals’ bad actions deserve better,” said Connie Partoyan, Executive Director of Better Solutions.
“We need to promote hospital competition by preventing monopolistic hospital systems from taking over local markets. By encouraging more independent health care providers to operate in New Hampshire, we can increase competition, improve quality, and lower prices for patients.”
According to a recent Lown Institute report, local nonprofit hospitals in Ohio receive a collective $2.2 billion in tax breaks each year. But, only one out of eight local hospitals spent more than it received in tax breaks on community investment from 2020-2022.
A new report from the Lown Institute shows that two major hospitals, UnityPoint Health’s Iowa Methodist Medical Center and MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center, fell $70 million short on charity care.
In states like Indiana, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Ohio, over 50% of independent doctors have closed due to hospital consolidation.
